Sania Mirza wins Hyderabad Tournament

Sania Mirza First Indian to Win a WTA Tourney
The 18-year-old Mirza won the Hyderabad Open on Sunday, beating a Ukranian with a name almost as hard to spell as mine in the final.

In this year's Aussie Open, Mirza became the first Indian woman to make it to the third round of a Grand Slam, where she lost to eventual chamipon Serena Williams 1-6, 4-6. She won the Wimbeldon junior doubles title with Alisa Kleybanova of Russia in 2003. (Article)

Mirza, the highest ranked Indian player of either gender, is known for her toughness and chutzpah. (Full Story)

When asked about power players in women's tennis, she said, "Frankly, I don't want to look like the Williams sisters. But you have to be strong". Mirza prays five times per day, and believes she can make the top 50 (she is currently ranked No.99). (Interviews: 1, 2, 3)
